"I think the audience has to be vocal and demand what they want to see and that they want diversity and that they want stories that reflect the zeitgeist."Johansson spoke ahead of the release of her latest film, Rough Night, which she is starring in alongside Kate McKinnon, Ilana Glazer, Jillian Bell, and Zoe Kravitz. The film follows the gals as they throw a hen party for their mate and involve themselves in some male stripper-related issues.
Johansson's co-stars have also urged audiences to express their demands to ensure that female-led films become the norm.
According to Bell, "The more people see them, the more the studio gets the note that it works.”
According to a study conducted by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 4 percent of directors of 2016's top grossing films were women.
Similarly, female lead protagonists only made up 29 percent of movies on the list.
Broad City star Glazer also said that audiences are clearly "hungry" for more diversity in film - it just needs to be given to them.
“People are so vocal about what they want to see, not just gender diversity but racial diversity.”Rough Night is landing in cinemas this week.
