Scream 5 directors have already teased a sixth movie may be on the way

Ghostface is going nowhere.

Scream 5 may have just landed in cinemas but it looks like another instalment in the iconic slasher franchise could be on the way.

The film is receiving mixed reviews from critics – while some are hailing it the best Scream movie since Wes Craven’s 1996 original, others claim it’s too repetitive and the entire franchise should just be left in the past.

But it’s got fans rushing to the nearest cinema in search of a spook and has already earned an estimated $30.6million (€26.8 million) at the US box office.

It has also dethroned Spider-Man: No Way Home from the top of the US box office earlier this week.

Scream 5 portrays a new killer who has donned the Ghostface costume and began targeting a group of teenagers in Westboro, leading Dewey (David Arquette), Sidney (Neve Campbell), and Gail (Courtney Cox) to take on the masked killer once again.

And due to the film’s success so far, directors and cast members seem pretty keen to follow-up with a sixth.

Speaking to Variety, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin Tyler Gillett agreed they would be “crazy” to end things at number five.

“So much of the movie is about fandom and what it means to be a fan and how you feel about it,” Matt said. “We have these meta-upon-meta moments, where we’re like, holy sh*t, like we are making a fan film about the making of a fan film about one of our favourite franchises. You could spiral.”

“There was really some comfort in that, I think,’ Tyler added. “Knowing that the movie itself was about fandom, I think that there was, there was an entry point for us that was really, really personal, and really emotional. The love letter of it was really real for us and was really easy for us to connect to.’

Matt concluded: “The whole experience has been such like a family experience, with the cast with the crew with the producers.

“Not to be corny, but it’s been a love fest – we’d be crazy not to want to continue it.”

And it appears the cast feel the exact same and would be more than up for a Scream 6.

Scream queen Neve Campbell, who plays Sidney Prescott and has appeared in every movie in the franchise so far, told ScreenRant: “It would seem there’s always more stories to be told in Woodsboro and there is a taste for it. So, I think, if people love this one, I would imagine there will be an appetite and we, of course, would all love to be a part of it.”

Looks like we’ll be heading back to Woodsboro sooner than we thought.
