The Simpsons pay tribute to Derry Girls in new episode

Tara Trevaskis Hoskin

Derry Girls have reached global acclaim on a new level with a feature in The Simpsons.

There is making it, and then there is making it on The Simpsons.

The iconic American cartoon paid homage to our very own Derry Girls with a subtle shop front.

In a new episode of its 22nd season, Homer takes his dog, Santa’s Little Helper, for a treat at an ice cream shop called ‘Dairy Girls Ice Cream’.

Lisa McGee, the writer of Derry Girls, expressed her joy on Twitter.

This was only topped when Simpson’s writer Matt Selman confirmed the connection on Twitter and then told Lisa it was “the least we could do.”

It is safe to say that she was overjoyed.

The Simpsons have referenced many significant TV and films over the years from A Clockwork Orange to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and we think it’s only right that Derry Girls now also have their own.

Released in 2018 Derry Girls became the most-watched series ever in Northern Ireland but as we can see it has also reached a massive global viewership since its release on Netflix.

It has also been Channel 4’s most successful comedy since Father Ted.

Everything from murals to walking tours in Ireland have been inspired by the show and its cult following.

The much-awaited series 3 is set to be released this year and we were gifted with the release of the trailer on Paddy’s Day.

Erin, Orla, Claire, Michelle, and the wee English fella aka James are back to finish school and complete their GCSE’S.

A celeb appearance from none other than Fat Boy Slim is also on the cards this time around.

We have no exact date for when it will be released yet but we do know that filming is finished up.

The creators have said that this is the last season for the show, with Nicola Coughlan who plays Claire explaining how this makes it all the more emotional.

“It’s really magical. I cried and cried and cried when I finished reading the scripts,” she said. “Because, you know, it’s our last one.

“It’s bittersweet, but I think we’re sending it off in style,” she said.
