The small Friends detail that explains Ross and Rachel’s relationship troubles

Keeley Ryan

It makes SO much sense.

Friends was the show that defined a generation – and thanks to constant re-runs, Netflix and its catchy one liners, its no wonder that it is still going strong after all these years.

Even though we will always have a soft spot for the six cast members, it’s been hard not to notice some of the small errors that cropped up on the show in recent months.

Like when the camera cut away to a new cast member (by accident) or the fact that Rachel looked alarmingly different in her passport photo when she was flying to Paris.

And now eagle-eyed Friends fans have noticed something the may explain all of Ross and Rachel’s rocky relationship – and it goes all the way to the beginning.

As in, episode one.

During the first episode of the show, which aired on September 22, 1994, Ross opens up an umbrella on Rachel – which, according to fans, kicks off seven years of bad luck between the pair.

Which actually makes so much sense, considering what went on to happen between the pair: Ross marrying Emily (but saying Rachel’s name instead); their constant makeups and breakups; and, of course, ‘we were on a break!’.

In the 173rd episode of the show, The One Where Rachel Tells, she finally confesses to Ross that she is pregnant with his child.

Airing on September 27, 2001, it is almost exactly seven years after he opened the umbrella and, therefore, the end of their ‘curse’.

Reddit user Smoothmotives shared the theory online, and fans are loving it.

They wrote:

“When Ross is in the coffee shop meeting Rachel, his umbrella opens up unexpectedly, inside; this begins a seven year bad luck streak with Rachel.

“Once the curse is lifted, Rachel tells Ross that he’s going to be a father.”

“This is my favourite fan theory in a long time,” one person responded.

Another fan wrote:

“If this is true, it would be the best writing in the whole show.”

Someone else commented:

“So happy this theory finally took off, people acted like I was crazy.”
