If there is one thing that Richard Curtis knows how to do and knows how to do well, it's writing and directing wonderful romantic films. No one quite captures that same level of sentimentality without being incredibly cheesy.
Curtis' real gift is that the characters he writes are entirely believable, they are the people we know in our daily lives, they may even be someone we pass in the street. Here are our six of the best Richard Curtis moments...
1. "To Me You Are Perfect"
That moment when Andrew Lincoln's Mark arrives at Keira Knightley's door in Love Actually to tell her that he loves her "without hope or agenda" is perhaps the sweetest and most touching of all the Richard Curtis moments. Just heartbreaking.
2. "Stop all the clocks"
When Matthew loses Gareth, in Four Weddings and a Funeral, this poem perfectly depicts that huge sense of loss. A perfect choice.
3. "I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy..."
Although Anna was a huge superstar in Notting Hill, she fell for the friendly local bookstore owner who was completely daunted by her fame. This moment just proved she was an ordinary girl.
4. "It's Only A Diary"
Let's be fair, Bridget was incredibly lucky she got away with this one in Bridget Jones's Diary. After Mark reads her diary and takes to the street, Bridget follows him only to discover that he is just buying her a new diary.
5. "I Love You"
There is an incredibly touching moment in About Time when Bill Nighy delivers a wonderful speech where he tells his son that he loves him. We don't want to spoil it but it's beautifully touching. About Time is in cinemas on September 4th.
6. "This is the... Prime Minister"
How wonderful is a Prime Minister who went looking for the woman he loved by knocking on everyone's door on Christmas Eve? Just too wonderful for words really. This scene in Love Actually will just make you want to hug everything.
About Time is in cinemas from today, September 4th.
