Uma Thurman says her role in Kill Bill continues to empower women

Orlaith Condon

Uma Thurman’s character in Kill Bill is undoubtedly one of the most badass female characters in film history.

Thurman inhabited the role of The Bride in the two-part film between 2003 and 2004, however the impact the films had on its audience lives on some 13 years later.

Speaking recently at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the 47-year-old actress said she still gets approached by women who thank her for portraying such a powerful character.

“Women would come up to me and they would say that somehow or other – they’d share a little bit – that the film helped them in their lives,” Thurman said.

“Whether they were feeling oppressed or struggling or had a bad boyfriend or felt badly about themselves, they said that film released in them some survival energy that was helpful.

“And that is probably one of the most gratifying things that I have ever experienced in response to a piece of art.”

The role earned Thurman two Best Actress nominations at the Golden Globes as well as at numerous other awards ceremonies.

There have been rumours that Kill Bill: Volume 3 could happen, with director Quentin Tarantino suggesting that The Bride’s story is not over in numerous interviews.
