The X Factor will reportedly not be returning to telly screens in 2020.

The TV talent show has been an annual summer-autumn staple since it first began in 2004.

The Sun report Simon Cowell is keen to “really think through the show” and how to “reinvigorate” it – so, it’s being rested for a year.

“Simon wants to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future,” an insider told the publication.

“Although The X Factor is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understand the rationale behind the idea of resting it this year and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right.”

In December, Simon signed a new deal to air Britain’s Got Talent until 2024. The deal also included a 2020 series of X Factor.

The news comes after two new takes on The X Factor were introduced late last year: X Factor: Celebrity and X Factor: The Band.

However, a spokesperson for Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor said that the plans for autumn 2020 are “still being finalised.”

“Plans for this autumn are still being finalised and will be announced in due course. We are currently filming Britain’s Got Talent 2020,” they said.

The talent show has launched a number of high-profile careers over the years, including Little Mix, One Direction, Olly Murs, Leona Lewis and JLS.
