He may play a socially awkward, slightly weird younger brother in The Hangover franchise, but in real life Zach Galifianakis is kind, compassionate and truly awesome.
The New York Daily News reports that when Zach was just getting started in show business back in the ealry 90s, he struck up a friendship with a woman who volunteered at a laundromat in Los Angeles. Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist depended on tips from customers in order to survive.
Two years ago, Zach learned that Mimi had fallen on hard times, had lost her home and was living on the streets of LA. Mimi was struggling to feed herself when Zach stepped in, bought her an apartment and began taking her to red carpet events.
Zach even took 87-year-old Mimi as his date to the premiere of The Hangover III yesterday. What a guy, right?
“I’m looking forward to it, I like the excitement of it,” said Mimi.

87-year-old Mimi has been friends with Zach for the past 20 years
Zach has previously taken Mimi to the opening night of The Hangover II and The Campaign. However, nobody knew who she was but this doesn’t phase Mimi.
“All the fans were taking photos and I waved at them, I said, ‘They don’t know who I am!’” said Mimi.
“Afterwards, they have a party at somewhere close by and you meet the stars. I drink lemon drop martinis with Grey Goose vodka,” she added.
And it turns out that Zach even invites Mimi to premieres when he’s not going to be there personally.

“If he’s in town, he takes me. Otherwise he lets me take a friend. I dress up nice and a friend helps me with my makeup. It’s fun, not something I’ve ever dreamed I’d experience. The limo takes me home afterwards,” said Mimi.
We think this is such a lovely story. Fair play Zach, you big legend!
