Llamas are the new unicorns – and now we have definitive PROOF

Louise Carroll

Cast your mind back (a few weeks ago oughta do it…) and pretty much everyone and their granny was completely obsessed with rainbow-hued mythical equines.

Not so anymore.

Yes, after indulging in the likes of unicorn toast, manicures, frappuccinos, and hair-styles, a whole load of us are shouting “enough!”

Step forward llamas – the animal which most certainly is ready and willing to step into a unicorn’s glittery shoes.

We know they make great party animals (pardon the pun) as evident from this year’s unusual llama wedding trend—and they’re proving to be making their way into the style stakes too.

It seems they’ve also been stopping traffic (literally) in Kent. Commuters on their way to work this morning were delayed as the fiesty llamas marched their way across train tracks.

We wonder will their sizeable ‘dos inspire us to reinvent some retro Seventies hairstyles too…

To get you llama-ready for the forthcoming season, Her has put together an essential list of ten key facts for you to read, study, and share. Enjoy!

  1. Llamas are NOT the same species as alpacas (although equally just as adorable). Instead, their closest cousin is none other than the camel.
  2. Llamas are native to South America’s Andes mountains.
  3. They are very social animals making them a pleasure to be around—they love being a part of the herd.
  4. Llamas communicate by humming or—if they sense danger—a specific ‘alarm call.’
  5. If they like you, they won’t spit on you (could be applied to many a social situation).
  6. Llamas enjoy a herbivorous diet finding snacks such as carrots and broccoli especially delicious.
  7. They’re a colourful bunch—llamas range in shade from brown and grey to pure black and white.
  8. They can weigh anywhere between 90kg-200kg.
  9. A baby llama is known as a cria.
  10. If you’d like to meet a real-life llama, Chrissie who is “full of personality” resides at Tenahely Farm, Co. Wicklow. Perfect for fun family day out!
