Driving in a different country might sound simple but there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.
From bringing all the necessary documentation to remembering to drive on the correct side of the road, here’s what you need to know when it comes to driving abroad...
1. There is a range of documentation that you will need including your full driving licence, passport, vehicle registration and insurance. You may also need a visa and an international driving permit. Before you leave, check with your insurance company to make sure you’re covered for driving abroad. It is also wise to have a European Health Insurance Card.
2. Some countries advise that you carry safety equipment including the warning triangle and a first aid kit. Take your car for a service before you leave for your trip and remember that 112 is the emergency number if you need assistance.
3. If you are renting a car your driving licence needs to have been issued a full year before you hire. Those under the age of 25 will be required to pay an extra charge. Also when hiring, check for any damage before you leave the car park and take photos (you do not want to be charged for a scratch you weren’t responsible for). Make sure you leave the car back with a full tank of petrol.
4. Last but not least, drive on the correct side of the road. It might sound simple but it can be easy to forget where you are. It is vital that you don’t panic if you do end up on the wrong side of the road. Simply pull over as soon and as safely as possible.
