A Status Yellow rain warning has been issued for Cork, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow from 7 pm tonight and will remain in place until 7 am tomorrow.
Met Éireann issued a statement that said: "Further rainfall associated with Storm Ciarán, combined with saturated ground conditions and high river levels, may lead to flooding."
The Status Yellow rain warning has been described as precautionary, given the current saturated ground levels.
Yet the counties affected are readying for the continued rain and strong winds to pass over from Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Cork County Council said that Storm Ciarán is due to pass close to the south coast on Wednesday night into Thursday, bringing falls of heavy rain and strong winds.
The council added that its crews are on standby in several known risk locations across the county and are currently clearing inlets and gullies.
Sandbags and pumping arrangements will be in place in known problem locations also be in place.
Met Éireann warned of localised flooding, difficult travel conditions and poor visibility, while there could be wave overtopping in coastal areas.
Meteorologist Linda Hughes said the country is "escaping the worst of the winds" and said rain would be the main impact of the storm.
Speaking on RTÉ's Drivetime, Linda said: "Parts of the south and southeast will see rain this evening, tonight, it will clear, then from the east tomorrow morning."
It's expected that things should let up tomorrow afternoon with showers predicted after Storm Ciarán passes.
