“I had people following me”

Baz Ashmawy has spoken out against protestors who attacked him after he helped build homes for Ukrainian refugees.

The TV presenter and the DIY SOS crew helped build homes for refugees in the Kingston College area of Mitchelstown.

Most people praised Baz and the team for helping refugees during such a distressing time, but a minority of viewers attacked him following the show.

They claimed he wasn’t “putting the Irish first.”

The presenter slated the protestors in a recent interview with the RTÉ Guide.

He said, “I had people following me to Kinsale on my night off. I got out of the car, and they started attacking me and I was thinking, “the energy these people are putting into chasing me and not doing anything to help people.”

Baz continued, “People were upset and wanted someone to blame but you can’t blame a show like DIY SOS because the people who helped build the houses for the Ukrainians are very often the same people who come back every week and help build houses for Irish people.”

He said the aim of DIY SOS is to help people and to spread kindness.

Johnny Aylward passed away this month.

Earlier this month, Baz paid tribute to his dear friend and DIY SOS star Johnny Aylward.

He sadly passed away from MND on March 13th at the age of 59.

Baz grew close to Johnny after he appeared on the RTÉ show.

He said he was incredibly popular.

“You were a hugely popular man with all the crew and volunteers. That was down to your humour, your dignity, your lust for life, your beautiful singing voice, your love for pints of Heineken, and your fowl fucking mouth.”
