On Sunday night, Cheryl took to the stage of the X Factor for her first performance in four years.

The star initially took a career break to “save her sanity” and now it looks like the reaction to her comeback stage performance could send her into retirement as insiders reveal the star has been left “devastated” by the reaction.

Speaking to The Sun Online, a source close to the star said:

“Cheryl’s devastated over the harsh comments about her performance.

“She always says that ‘haters’ come with fame and she expects some negativity, but she didn’t expect this reaction.

“She goes on social media to interact with her fans and it actually shocked her, reading some of the comments.

“At first she was angry – she watched the performance back over ten times and can’t understand what she did wrong.

“She just feels like some people are always going to be against her and she can’t change their minds.”

Many fans criticised Cheryl’s performance for being “overly provocative” and “weird” as the 35-year-old took the stage in thigh high boots and a leotard and gained an influx of comments for one move which saw her lick the side of her hand.

The track she performed “Love Made Me Do It” is about her past relationships and co-written by Girls Aloud bandmate, Nicola Roberts.

And despite the performance going down like a led balloon, Cheryl’s hit is still at number 9 in the iTunes charts with many fans praising the comeback hit.

Cheryl has remained quiet on social media since the performance.
