The film is the latest in the Disney catalogue to get a live-action makeover, following last year's smash hit Maleficent and Kenneth Branagh's highly-anticipated take on Cinderella.
Watson took to Facebook to share her delight at snagging the role, saying that her six-year-old self was "on the ceiling - heart busting".
