He needed to be called out, and Coughlan obliged.
Nicola Coughlan took us all by storm with her absolutely brilliant portrayal of the hilarious character of Clare in Derry Girls this year.
The show was compared to iconic pieces of comedy such as Father Ted and The Inbetweeners after only a few episodes, and every single cast member delivered excellent performances.
Coughlan is now playing Joyce Emily in a play called Miss Jean Brodie, a production that has received rave reviews from a number of critics.
But unfortunately, Philip Fisher of the British Theatre Guide felt the need to take his review of the play down a different angle.
For some bizarre reason, he felt the need to refer to Coughlan’s character as an “overweight little girl”.
In a show that Coughlan was in a year ago, Jess and Joe Forever, the same critic referred to her as a “fat girl”, despite the fact that it had no relevance to the review.
Baffling.
Coughlan let him have it on Twitter, in a brilliant way.
Hi @BritTheatreGuid, for the second time your reviewer Philip Fisher has come to see a show I’m in, and as part of reviewing the show he has also reviewed my body.
How can you continue to support this? pic.twitter.com/Rtd7mVBmSA— Nicola Coughlan (@nicolacoughlan) June 14, 2018
I was in a show called Jess and Joe Forever @traversetheatre last August which he came to see and his opening sentence was “Jess is a fat girl”
My weight has no relevance to either the performance I gave in that or in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie— Nicola Coughlan (@nicolacoughlan) June 14, 2018
She also called him out for his extremely inappropriate description of a rape scene in the play Low Level Panic.

She finished her demolition of the critic by saying: “Let me state this clearly, he is not welcome to review any show I am in from now till forever. And I plan to be in a lot of damn shows. Peace.”
That’s him told.
