The Coronas frontman Danny O’Reilly has revealed that performing the band’s hits is now “bittersweet”, as many of them were written about ex-girlfriend Laura Whitmore.

In one of his first interviews about the couple’s high-profile break-up, the singer said that going on tour with the band was “therapy” and helped him to “get through” the end of their relationship.

“When I did go through the break-up, at the time we were touring around Europe just after it happened, and thank God for that. It definitely made it a bit easier for me that we were on tour and busy and getting that therapy every night playing music,” he told The Irish Daily Star.

“Even though all the songs were about the person I had just broken up with, it was still okay.  I would have moments like that where I was a bit emotional for a bit of a song.  But you get on with it and thankfully the gig gets you through it.”

It’s believed that the MTV presenter, who has since been linked with Miles Kane, Paolo Nutini and Love/Hate actor Killian Scott, broke up with O’Reilly in 2012 and while he admitted that performing some of the songs he wrote about their relationship is difficult, he added that he would continue to be “totally honest” in his music.

“Sometimes I look back at songs that were happy songs about the start of the relationship and they are bittersweet. I look at them from a different angle now.  I think, ‘Oh God, that was nice when I felt that way.  I thought everything was so simple.’  But I think that’s just the price you pay as a songwriter.

“I will always be totally honest with lyrics and I will never try to write about politics or anything like that.”
