Kate and William

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expecting their third child in April and there has been great speculation about what the royal couple will name their baby.

In recent days, a new favourite has emerged and if there’s any truth in the reports, they’re expecting a girl.

Mary is the new favourite and a number of bookmakers have now suspended betting on the name since lunchtime today.

According to The Daily Star, Paddy Power and Betfair have lowered the odds for the royal baby name being Mary from 12/1 to 3/1.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power told the publication:

“We thought everyone was only talking about the Royal Wedding, until someone came along with a right royal bet on Kate and Wills’s third child.

“We’re convinced now that it’ll be a little girl, with Mary now four times more likely after today’s betting”.

third royal baby's name

Previously, Arthur, Alice and Diana were among the favourites for the royal baby but that has changed.

Mary is a very popular name in the royal family and if the predictions are right, the child would be the second Princess Mary of Cambridge, following Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge.

Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge was the mother of Queen Mary and given the penchant for choosing traditional names, it would not be overly surprising if the couple did opt for Mary.
