She explained that they're not divorced, but they're not romantically together.
In an interview with NBC News, she revealed that they're no longer in a relationship.
She said they decided to keep things a secret because they weren't ready to share the news publicly.
"Just not being ready…still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership," she said.
"In regards to how do we present that to people, you know, and we hadn’t figured that out.
"I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise."
She said their relationship was fractured but they tried for years to fix it. However, in 2016, they realised there was no coming back from the damage that was done.
"Why it fractured...that — that’s a lot of things ... By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she shared.
Will Smith married Jada in 1997 after meeting her when she auditioned to play his girlfriend in 'The Fresh Prince of Bel Air'.
The pair share two children- daughter Willow and son Jaden.
Smith was previously married to Sheree Zampino, but they divorced in 1995.
