Kate Garraway gives update as inflammation “passed through” Derek’s brain

Kate Garraway has given an update on her husband Derek's condition, revealing he is in a "terrible state" as she thinks the inflammation has now passed through his brain. The Good Morning Britain presenter has been taking care of her husband since April of 2020 when he contracted Covid-19 and has been having severe health problems as a result. Needing 24 hour care from nurses in their London home, Kate is now telling all about how the situation has progressed as she sits down with former co-presenter Piers Morgan on ITV's Life Stories. Kate revealed just exactly how Derek is doing, revealing that she is just devastated for him and the suffering he has endured over the past year and a half. She said: "It's devastated him. From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. "His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We're pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain. "He still can't communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he's in a terrible state. Look, he's alive, Piers." She continued: "It does feel as though I walked through a fiery furnace or fell down a rabbit hole. "The world went dark and still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, really." Kate then went on to speak with Piers about the three words Derek managed to say ahead of the interview, something that left Kate completely stunned. "We had a moment last night when I rang you about this interview, without warning me, you said, 'Why don't you talk to Derek?'" Piers said. He continued: "Derek replied when you said it was me, a very loud, clear, 'Hello', and I said a few things to him and the end and he said, 'Thank you'. I was stunned." "We all were. The carers that were there with me at the time burst into tears," Kate replied.
