Lizzo has been named as TIME’s Entertainer Of The Year, and we couldn’t agree more

Olivia Hayes

What a year it has been for Lizzo.

Ever since her hit Truth Hurts was played on the Netflix movie Someone Great in April, the singer has been blasted into the limelight; and so she should.

Whether it’s great tunes or body empowerment, Lizzo is on top of it. She’s a light for people who might be struggling with body image – however, she can still admit that she has had her bad days.

She told TIME: “I was not happy with the way I felt to my body. I didn’t feel sexy, and I didn’t know when it was going to end.

“There were times when I would go onstage and be like, ‘Y’all, I’m not going to lie. I’m not feeling myself.’ Sometimes I’d break down and cry. Sometimes the audience would just cheer to make me feel better,” she said.

“I was getting sick a lot. I was like, What the f**k is going on? I need to fall back in love with my body.”

As well as being happy within herself, she also recognised that society changed, and while body positivity was always there, it became more mainstream.

Taking a quote from her interview, she wrote on Instagram: “There were a lot of things that weren’t popular but existed, like body positivity, which at first was a form of protest for fat bodies and black women and has now become a trendy, commercialized thing.

“Now I’ve seen it reach the mainstream. Suddenly I’m mainstream! How could we have guessed something like this would happen when we’ve never seen anything like this before?”

It’s a breath of fresh air seeing Lizzo pop up on Instagram and if you’re like me, you can’t help but bop along to her tunes whenever they come on in the car, the office, the club or even the supermarket.

Lizzo has been a force to be reckoned with in 2019, and I can only see that continuing in 2020.
