“She’s not making herself any friends.”
Although we didn’t get to see what actually went down at Meghan Markle’s baby shower in New York City last week, there’s little doubt that it was a super lavish affair.
Guests including Amal and George Clooney and Serena Williams came together in the penthouse of the Mark Hotel, the biggest penthouse in the US.
There they enjoyed a flower arranging class and ate a meal cooked by Michelin-starred chef Jean Georges.
The event is believed to have cost $348,000 (over €306,000).
The hotel was mobbed with press and fans as Meghan and guests, flowers and presents were seen coming and going.
It was a high-profile spectacle that won’t have earned Meghan any good grace in the eyes of her in-laws.
The royal family likes to be subtle, former butler Paul Burrell has said.
“Although William mixes with A-list celebrities, he doesn’t take them home with him, they aren’t his friends, they are people he works with,” Burrell wrote in The Sun.
“The celebrity world in which Meghan was submerged seems to be where all her friends are, and that can only spell disaster.
“The Queen has always said: ‘We are not celebrities, to be royal is something very different’.”
While the celebration might have been just what Meghan needed after months of press intrusion and family drama, Diana’s former right-hand man reckons she should keep her head down.
“We don’t want to see Meghan every single day in the newspapers and on TV,” he continued.
“Prince William tries to keep his family out of the spotlight, so the fact Meghan’s baby shower was so flaunted will be frustrating for him, and it is causing a rift in the family.
“She’s not making herself any friends and there will be a backlash.”
