Niall Horan’s mam defends him after Guinness backlash

That’s that so.

Niall Horan’s mam has defended her son after the One Direction star received backlash following his homecoming documentary with Guinness.

After the country sat down to watch Niall and Lewis Capaldi travel from Belfast to Mullingar, the pair collaborated with Guinness to make Niall Horan’s Homecoming: The Road To Mullingar.

Ever since the show aired, Niall has seen some backlash as it was seen to be promoting alcohol, as he and Lewis enjoyed a few pints of the black stuff.

Kevin O’Rourke, a reformed drinker, started the debate on RTE Radio 1’s Liveline on Tuesday saying: “It was sponsored by Guinness, and I just thought to myself that it shouldn’t have been, Niall Horan is only 29 and has a young demographic listenership.”

Niall’s mam Maura Gallagher also appeared on the show later on Thursday to defend her son, telling Joe: “It was 0.0 all the way.

“It wasn’t the alcoholic Guinness, and he wasn’t drinking and driving or any of that sort of thing.

“I know we saw him holding the glass, but it was 0.0.

“I can only speak for the part when he was in Mullingar, I was there and 0.0 was given. I couldn’t have it because I was celiac but my husband tasted it and said it was lovely.”

The show followed the two famous friends as they took a road trip around the country, heading from Belfast to Carlingford, then onto Dublin where they visited Windmill Lane Recording Studios, the Guinness Storehouse and busked on Grafton Street before heading to Mullingar.

Maura added: “People are entitled to their opinion, but when I heard it[the show] was coming on I couldn’t wait to see Niall and Lewis. Maybe I’m biased. I watched the show the other night and Guinness didn’t come into my head at all…I was just laughing at the two of them.

“And I know they visited Guinness, but the fact that they were sitting there with a couple of pints, I didn’t think too much about it.”

“And to be honest, even my friends said it was a lovely show, they didn’t even mention the Guinness part, it was just to see Niall and Lewis.

She added: “I just want to say I wouldn’t make little of anyone’s opinion on your programme, Kevin had a serious point, and god love anyone that has a drink problem.”
