Olivia Buckland has issued an apology after using a homophobic slur.

The former Love Island contestant had commented on a photo of her fiancé Alex Bowen and his friend Brad Skelly saying “homos.”

The photo, which was shared on Bowen’s Instagram page, showed the two men posing topless for a mirror selfie.

Buckland’s comment has since been deleted and she has issued an apology through LGBT media site, Pink News.

Her representative told the publication:

“Olivia would like to apologise for any offence she has caused. She is an advocate for the LGBTQ community and is saddened that she may have upset anyone.

“It was a comment said in jest to her fiancé and has now been removed, any suggestion Olivia is homophobic is ridiculous.”

In response to Buckland’s comment, one person wrote: “Do you need to use that word – do you how many kids get bullied and tortured and as a role model for so many young kids out there do you think you could have been a bit smarter.”

Olivia responded herself saying: “Homosexual isn’t an offensive word if you are not a bully or not a homophone. [sic].”

She then added: “Brad and Alex pictured above are very close and myself and Brad’s girlfriend have a running opinion that they would make the perfect couple if in a different world.

“You shouldn’t reflect negative connotations on the word homosexual,” she said.

Buckland then continued to defend herself on Twitter, saying that she meant to say that homosexual “shouldn’t be” an offensive word.

“Bad choice of words by me,” she said.
