Sam Smith asks to be addressed by pronouns they/them

“Today is a good day, so here goes…”

Sam Smith has asked to be addressed by the pronouns they/them after coming out as non-binary.

The How Do You Sleep? singer took to Instagram on Friday, where they told their followers they had “decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.”

They said:

“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM.

“After a lifetime of being at war with my gender, I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out.

“I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it.

” I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you.”

The 27-year-old added that while they are “at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary,” they hoped to be one day.

“So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open,” the popstar added.

Earlier this year, they shared that they identified as non-binary and genderqueer in an interview with Jameela Jamil.

They explained [via Cosmopolitan]:

“You are a mixture of all different things. You are your own special creation…I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.”
