Here’s the problem with Sarah Jessica Parker’s comments on Feminism

Megan Roantree

We’re slightly confused.

Sarah Jessica Parker found a place in our hearts during Sex and the City, but her latest comments have us a bit puzzled.

She recently did an interview with Marie Claire in which she discusses everything from her new show to her divorce, but her comments on women’s rights are what has people talking.

In a sneak peek of the interview on Marieclaire.com Sarah Jessica gave her take on feminism, saying:

“I am not a feminist. I don’t think I qualify.

I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don’t even want to separate it anymore.

I’m so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally.”

We take issue with this comment because states that she is not a feminist, and immediately goes on to define exactly what feminism is.

She doesn’t stop there though, as she then discusses the gender pay gap, which is definitely one of the biggest issues known to women and something that feminism is strongly associated with.

“I would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender.” She said.

Sounds like feminism to us.

And finally, she discusses actresses in Hollywood.

“Listen, Jennifer Lawrence deserves every bit as much as her male counterpart. It’s indisputable. Emma Watson is an amazing young woman, and it’s important for her to talk about women’s issues. She isn’t concerned about herself. Women are paying the bills, getting it done, getting the kids here and there. The more we address that, we are all going to be better.”

So basically SJP believes in equality, is against the gender pay gap and believes that female actors should be treated the same as their male counterparts, and yet, she is not a feminist.

She stated that she doesn’t qualify.

This makes us wonder about why so many people, even high profile celebrities are afraid to identify as a feminist. There is clearly still a stigma attached.

People continue to associate feminism with angry, crazy men-hating women who want to complain all the time.

Young girls who believe in equality are afraid that being a feminist is unattractive and comments like Sarah Jessica’s only fuel this belief.

There are so many misconceptions about feminism which keeps the stigma alive.

Anyone at all who believes in equality can be a feminist, Orange is the New Black’s Matt McGorry being a high-profile example of a male feminist.

Feminist’s do not believe that women are, or want women to be, better or more powerful than men, they simply want both genders to be given the same opportunities.

People who are on board with feminism can also be on board with tradition, from taking your husband’s name to wearing makeup and girly clothes.

If you believe in equality for everyone, it’s important to realise that that is the exact definition of feminism.

Actor Aziz Ansari put’s it better than we ever could.
