Fans weren't happy.

“I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humour.”

What was meant to be a lighthearted joke, backfired on Sarah Michelle Gellar during the week when she uploaded a series of sexy images of herself, taken back in 2007 as a reminder to not “overeat this Thanksgiving”.

The images which showcased the Buffy star in lingerie were not met well as fans believed the star was promoting “thinspiration” on a holiday which should be about “love and gratitude”.

Another wrote: Your caption is problematic and I suggest you do some research on eating disorders, the mental health issues that go along with them, and how diet culture is harmful to women. Girls look up to you, and you should be mindful of the message you’re sending.”

But since, Gellar has apologised for all confusion caused, taking to the platform to let her followers know that it was meant to be a funny dig at herself for always overeating during the festive period and not in anyway “fat shaming”.

The 41-year-old apologised for the post many found “insensitive”.

“It’s come to my attention that some people think I was ‘fat shaming’ with this post. That could not be further from my intentions,” she said. “I love Thanksgiving and unfortunately my eyes are often bigger than my stomach, and I tend to eat so much I make myself sick. This was a joking reminder to myself not to do that. I’m terribly sorry that people were offended by my attempt at humour. Any one that knows me, knows I would never intentionally ‘shame’ any one on any basis. I am a champion of all people,” the star wrote.

Other fans then backed Gellar for her self-love and reminded her to not be worried by the people “who must have an opinion on everything”.
