Will Smith’s mom defends son after Chris Rock slap

As the world watched in shock when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, the general opinion varied on the rights and wrongs of the whole ordeal.

But for Smith’s 85 year old mother Carolyn, she was left surprised by the whole thing and is backing her son all the way.

Discussing the incident with local Philadelphia news station ABC6, Carolyn said: “He is a very even, people person. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. The first time in his lifetime. It did [surprise me]. I’ve never seen him do that.”

If you’ve somehow managed to miss what happened, during the Oscars on Sunday night, Rock made a joke at Jada Pinkett-Smith’s expense which caused her husband Will to take matters into his own hands.

Making a joke about her shaved head, Will and Jada both took offence as she shaved it due to having alopecia. Will then stormed the stage, slapped Chris and shouted “Keep my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth.”

Telling her son to head on a holiday and get some rest, she gushed about him winning his first Oscar for King Richard, something he was awarded only minutes after the slapping incident.

“I know how he works and how hard he works,” Carolyn said. “He never half-steps. I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting, and when I heard the name I was just like….yes!”

Will has since apologised to Chris over the incident, and Chris has said that he won’t be pressing charges against him.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Will wrote on Instagram. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong.”
