Zoe Saldana has revealed she has no intention of boycotting Dolce & Gabbana following their controversial remarks on same-sex parenting, saying it would be ‘the stupidest thing’ if it affected her fashion choice.
The actress told
E! News at the 2015 GLAAD Media Awards that although people are allowed their own opinion, she wouldn’t have chosen to publicise her opinion:
"People are allowed to their own opinion, however, I wouldn't have chosen to be so public about something that's such a personal thing."
"Obviously it caused some sensitivity, but then again if you continue to follow the news, you see they all kinda hugged it out, so why are we making a big deal about it?"
Saldana is one of the few celebrities avoiding the boycott, with Elton John, Madonna, Ricki Martin, Victoria Beckham and Sharon Stone all voicing their disgust at the comments made by the designers.
The interview with
Panorama magazine quoted the designers with statements including "we oppose gay adoptions” and "You are born to be a mother and a father. Or at least that's how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented wombs, semen chosen from a catalogue."
Offering an explanation for the statements, Saldana continued:
"My husband is from Italy and if I judged him based on the words that he misuses in our English language he wouldn't be here today. It's like look people, have a drink, relax, it's okay."
Since the public backlach, both designers released a statement saying:
"It was never our intention to judge other people's choices. We do believe in freedom and love."
