It has been confirmed that Ardal O’Hanlon is joining the second season of Derry Girls

Well, this is a match made in Heaven.

This week, we got our first look at the second season of Derry Girls after the hit TV show dropped a (very exciting) trailer.

And now, it has been confirmed that Father Ted star Ardal O’Hanlon has joined the cast for round two.

“Ardal O’Hanlon joins our family this year, which is brilliant,” Saoirse-Monica Jackson, who plays Erin Quinn, said while speaking to RadioTimes.

It’s not yet known how big of a part Ardal will play in the series, but we do know that he’s not going to play a priest.

Speaking coyly about his character, Saoirse-Monica said: “I think it’s something that everybody will recognise, and he completely gets it so on the money.

“It was really surreal, just looking at him, because he’s such an iconic figure in Ireland, and he’s such a lovely man. He’s so good in it.

“There’s a scene where it gets quite physical, and (writer and creator) Lisa came over. She was like, ‘Don’t bully Ardal’. And we were like, ‘We’re not bullying him, he’s like a national treasure!’ Cause we had to like go for it in the scene.”

As the trailer says, the new season is “coming soon,” but honestly, we’d plonk ourselves on the couch and watch the full thing if it came out tomorrow.
