Julia Garner to play Madonna in upcoming biopic

Katy Brennan

Madonna has found her Madonna.

Julia Garner has been offered the role as Madonna in an upcoming biopic all about the singer’s life, according to Deadline.

Madonna herself is set to direct the film, which based on a script by Diablo Cody. She has also been heavily involved in the casting process, putting talent through a gruelling audition process that included choreography sessions as well as dancing, singing and reading tests.

Other actresses who were considered for the role include Florence Pugh, Alexa Demie and Odessa Young – among others.

It is expected that Garner will accept the offer. She is said to have been the top choice for a while now, but had not yet been offered the part as several things about the film needed to be clarified first – including the budget as well as some creative factors, such as how long it is going to be.

While the two time Emmy-Award winner is well-known for her roles in the hit Netflix drama Ozark and Shonda Rhimes’ true crime series Inventing Anna, this would be her biggest feature film role to date.

Appearing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in October last year, Madonna opened up about why she’s making the movie herself.

“The reason I’m doing it is because a bunch of people have tried to write movies about me, but they’re always men,” she said.

She then began to describe one script from a specific studio that was not only “hideous” and “superficial” but also from an unnamed director she described as a “total misogynist” who had “no understanding of women,”

“Like they sent me the script because they wanted my blessing, and I read it,” she recalled. “It was the most hideous, superficial crap I’ve ever read.”

She added: “No appreciation for women. No respect for women.”
