Stop everything: Supermarket Sweep is coming back to our TV screens

Can't handle.

Gillian Fitzpatrick

Supermarket Sweep – the game-show involving ordinary people throwing frozen turkeys, boxes of cereal, and inflatable bananas into their trolleys in lightning-quick time.

Fronted by Dale Winton, it was a classic of Nineties television… and now it seems that it’s set to make a 21st-century comeback: a leading production company announced on Friday that it has acquired the rights to the format.

“The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favorite game show which has travelled with such success over the years,” Fremantle Media said in a statement that is sure to delight the television-owning populace of the world.

Apparently the show first aired on ABC in the US way back in 1965, but most Irish folk remember the Nineties UK version.

That offering consisted of three teams all vying for cash prizes by drawing on their shopping skills and expert knowledge of grocery merchandise.

The show concluded with its iconic trolley dash through the aisles – where teams could also pick-up bonus inflatable fruit.

There is no word yet on whether Dale Winton will return for the revamp, although presenter Rylan Clark-Neal has already declared his admiration for Supermarket Sweep – taking to Twitter to state: “Praying supermarket sweep rumours are true. Literally living for this news.”

Fingers crossed this makes it to our screens at some stage in 2018. Until then… next time you’re at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having on Supermarket Sweep!
