Two soap icons are about to enter the I’m A Celeb castle

Ellen Fitzpatrick

What a treat.

I’m A Celeb is making some updates to its list of celebrities set to appear on the show, with two new additions heading to the castle.

Every year, the camp is surprised by two late arrivals only a few days in, and this year we’re getting two soap opera legends joining the mix.

Heading to the castle in Wales is Simon Gregson, or as you might know him better, Steve McDonald from Coronation Street.

Joining him is another icon, Eastenders’ Ian Beale is also making an appearance, or should we say his real name, Adam Woodyatt.

The two are some of the most loved and recognisable characters on their respected TV soaps, and Simon hopes viewers will see more to him than his character.

Looking forward to people seeing “a different side to me”, Simon has admitted there’s not much difference between him and Steve.

He said: “For the simple reason that I had no idea what I was doing when I joined the show, I’d never acted, I didn’t know what I was doing, I kind of learned on the job.

“As the decades rolled by, I thought well the simplest way to do this is maybe just be a more exaggerated me.

“Obviously the big differences are I probably wouldn’t do half the things that idiot does, and he wouldn’t do half the things I do.

“It would be nice for people to see I’ve got a modicum more of intelligence than Steve.

“It’ll be nice for people to see a different side to me, hopefully that’ll come across if I’m not too absolutely nervous.”

With pressure to go on the show from his children who are big fans, Simon admitted that they won’t be impressed if he doesn’t do well.

The pair are not the first soap stars to be newcomers together, with Coronation Street star Andy Whyment and EastEnders actor Cliff Parisi both joining the Australian jungle in 2019.

I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! continues on Virgin Media One at 9pm on Thursday night, when the pair will be joining.
