Filming for the remake is set to start next year.

Actress Rachel Zegler has been cast to play the title role in Disney’s upcoming adaption of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The 20 year-old has a busy year ahead, as she will make her film debut as Maria in Steven Spielberg’s adaption of West Side Story this December.

It’s understood that Disney casting executives were able to see Zeglar’s performance in the musical which helped influence their choice.

According to Deadline, the live-action Snow White remake will begin production in 2022. Marc Webb, who directed 500 Days of Summer (2009) and Spider-Man (2012), is also on board.

The casting of Zegler was announced yesterday.

The star shared a screenshot of an article on her Instagram page and wrote, “Well… hello to a dream come true.”

Commenting on his choice, Webb said: “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal talents are just the beginning of her gifts. Her strength, intelligence and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.”

Insider sources claim that the film will expand upon the original 1938 film. The project has been in development since 2016.

Musical enthusiasts will be relieved to know that the soundtrack will be in excellent hands. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will write original songs for the film. The duo have won Oscar and Tony Awards in the past, for their work on The Greatest Showman (2017), La La Land (2016) and Dear Evan Hansen (2015).

The Snow White film – which is currently untitled – is just one of the live action films that Disney has in the works. Fans can look forward to seeing Halle Bailey play Ariel in The Little Mermaid which is currently being filmed.

On top of that, Tom Hanks is set to star in a Pinocchio remake, while director Jon M. Chu will take the reins for a live-action production of Lilo and Stitch.
