You might be surprised by the most played song of the 21st century

Olivia Hayes

You might be surprised at first, but then, think; how many times have you listen to this song over the years?

The most listened to song of the 21st century has been revealed and it’s not exactly a banger… but it is one that you’ll instantly remember.

While we might have bopped along to Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ for weeks on end or danced to Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I’ve Got A Feeling’ at every party in 2009, it wasn’t a dance tune that made it to the top spot.

Instead, it was Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’.

When you think about it, it’s basically been played on every TV show since it first debuted at those pivotal loved-up-but-I-lost-you moments.

Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody told the BBC: “It’s unbelievable. I’m not sure how that happened.”

He went on: “It’s an emotionally open song and it’s a simple song. But it’s also unabashedly a love song, and we don’t really have any others.

“The way it unifies an audience is the thing I most cherish about it. It’s a beautiful moment every time you play it.”

‘Chasing Cars’ is from Snow Patrol’s fourth album, Eyes Open and was the 14th best-selling single in 2006.
