In a perfect world, former bandmates would just agree to disagree and move on to future projects with a smile plastered across their faces, optimistic about the future and wishing the others their best.
But, in reality, when a band breaks up - pop bands in particular - the end basically means that all the repressed resentment and anger that has been bubbling under the surface for years, suddenly becomes public knowledge. And all the juicy details inevitably make it into the papers... or magazine in the case of Sarah Harding.
Never one to mince her words, 31-year-old Sarah has hit back at Nadine Coyle's Twitter claims that she didn't want Girls Aloud to split in an interview with Look magazine.

Speaking to the magazine she said: "At no point did she try and stop us, so you’d have to ask her why she did that. I have to respect her decision."
Derry-born Nadine had tweeted: ''You should know by now I had no part in any of this split business. I couldn't stop them. I had the best time & want to keep going."
Addressing rumours of a rift with Nadine, Sarah said: "No, that’s never happened. We all went to Manchester and had the after-party with our friends and family. Then we kind of hugged it out and just danced.
"Of course it worries me there are reports of fallouts between us, because it’s upsetting to our fans. We wouldn’t be where we are now without their loyalty."
So, if rumours of a rift are untrue, why did the successful girlband split in the wake of a successful arena tour?
"We’ve just had eight weeks of being together non-stop, so it’s nice to have a break," she revealed.
"It’s like being sisters - after a while you feel a little bit suffocated... It was so nostalgic all being back together and it was good, but it did feel like the right time. We can’t go on forever."
Looks like someone should have let Nads know...
