Christina Applegate plans to change career path following MS diagnosis

“I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5am and spending 12 to 14 hours on set.”

Christina Applegate has spoken about her plans to pivot her career amid her experience with multiple sclerosis (MS).

The actress was diagnosed with the condition in 2021 and has since taken a step back from her acting engagements. After taking a number of months off work, she finished the final season of Netflix’s Dead To Me. Now, however, she has shared that it’s likely her acting career will go down a different route due to her condition.

In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Christina said that she will finish up with set life, and focus instead on voiceover work and producing and developing to “make some cash to make sure (her) daughter’s well fed” and that they are “homed”.

“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5am and spending 12 to 14 hours on set,” she said. “I don’t have that in me at this moment.”

Christina also indicated that the Screen Actors Guild Awards will be the last awards show she’ll attend.

In a previous interview with The New York Times, the actress spoke about coming to terms with the fact that her condition won’t necessarily improve.

She said: “There was the sense of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better.’ And there is no better. But it was good for me. I needed to process my loss of my life, my loss of that part of me. So I needed that time.”

Christina also spoke about how important it was for her to continue working on Dead To Me on her “own terms”.

“I had an obligation,” she said. “The powers that be were like, ‘Let’s just stop. We don’t need to finish it.’

“I said, ‘No. We’re going to do it, but we’re going to do it on my terms.'”
