Singer George Michael has revealed that he has “completely stopped” using cannabis and prefers to watch Corrie instead.

Speaking to The Big Issue, he said that he has been clean for “well over a year-an-a-half”.

Michael has a history of battling drug use but said that his time in prison and health scares has helped him to refocus his life.

The singer was sentenced to eight weeks behind bars for driving under the influence of drugs and in 2011, suffered from pneumonia while touring.

“I decided to change my life and I haven’t touched it,” he said, referring to the drug.

“I watch Corrie especially because it’s more of a laugh. Even when life is tragic on Coronation Street, it’s still funny,” Michael said of the popular soap, though added that he isn’t a fan of EastEnders due to their portrayal of gay characters.

He concluded: “I hope for their sakes and the sake of gay kids in this country, regardless of their cultural background, that EastEnders gets a clue and begins to acknowledge their responsibility and provide us with gay characters that have no reason to live in fear. We do exist.”

This is his first print interview in five years.
