Selma Blair urged Christina Applegate to get tested for MS after spotting a symptom

“I’m going to have a better quality of life”.

Selma Blair has revealed she urged Christina Applegate to get tested for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) after she spotted a very common symptom she displayed.

The actress first revealed that she had been diagnosed with the condition in October 2018 and after noticing the same symptoms she had, she didn’t want her friend to suffer the same way.

Christina was then diagnosed in the summer of 2021 with MS and said that it was Selma who helped her get tested for the heartbreaking illness.

According to MS Ireland, Multiple Sclerosis “is a condition affecting the central nervous system (CNS)”.

“I was sitting in Selma’s living room, our children playing, and I told Selma I’d been having this weird tingling in my feet,” Christina told British Vogue.

“She said, ‘You must get tested for MS.’ [Even my doctor doubted it] but there it was.

“In essence, because of her I’m going to have a better quality of life”.

Selma also spoke to the publication, saying she initially wanted to hide her symptoms as she felt “lost and sad” and struggled with “self-hatred”.

Terrified that she would end up losing her job due to her illness before she was diagnosed, Selma said she “gave up almost until the diagnosis.”

MS affects the brain and spinal cord, with the NHS saying there is “a wide range of potential symptoms, including problems with vision, arm or leg movement, sensation or balance.”

The main symptoms include:

  • fatigue
  • difficulty walking
  • vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • problems controlling the bladder
  • numbness or tingling in different parts of the body
  • muscle stiffness and spasms
  • problems with balance and coordination
  • problems with thinking, learning, and planning

If you are concerned about symptoms you may be experiencing, it is strongly advised to contact your GP and if they think the symptoms you are displaying are of concern, you will be referred to a specialist.
