YOU almost didn’t happen and the reason is kinda devastating

Olivia Hayes

We loved YOU.

We were absolutely gripped by it the minute it hit our Netflix screens on St. Stephen’s Day. It takes you through the story of how one man went from being an online stalker to a full on killer and… it was just mental. Mesmerising. And we all totally immersed ourselves in it.

So much so, it was all we could talk about when we came back from our Christmas holidays.

However, it almost didn’t go ahead – especially not the second season.

According to the show’s writer, Greg Berlanti, he tried for years to get the series picked up but everyone said no.

“We pitched it and sold it to Showtime of all places, but once they read the script, they were really cool about saying, ‘You can take it somewhere else’.”

He then took it to Lifetime, who did pick it up but it took them more than two years to release it and when it finally aired (it was first released on Lifetime during the summer of 2018) it didn’t go down too well.

“You go into offices and sound like a crazy person. ‘I still think it’s going to work, I still think it’s going to work – maybe one more episode, maybe if people have a chance to see five more episodes.'”

Lifetime refused to do a second season, and then the wonderful Netflix stepped in and bought it.

Thank God they did because it was probably one of the best TV shows we’ve watched in the past year. It went down so well on Netflix that it has been commissioned for a second season, which they have already started filming for.

We just can’t wait to see where the story goes.
