April’s fate has been revealed as Sarah Drew exits Grey’s Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy is well known for it's heart-wrenching, devastating finales that basically all but guarantee fans will be saying farewell to at least one character.

And since fans heard that Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw - who play Dr April Kepner and Dr Arizona Robbins - are exiting the show at the end of this season, there has been plenty of speculation that one of the beloved doctors would be meeting their maker. Especially after the promo for the most recent episode hinted at something very bad for April. Spoilers for the latest episode of Grey's Anatomy below this point.  In the episode, which aired on Thursday night in the United States, Matthew Taylor (April's ex-fiancé) is rushed into the hospital after having rolled his car. In his groggy state, he asks about April and if she is okay. Combined with the fact that none of the other Grey Sloan doctors have actually seen her, tips them off that she must have been in the car with him. Owen rushes out to the accident scene, where he spots April lying unconscious in a ravine; hypothermic and unresponsive. The group of doctors spend the hour trying to warm her up before attempting to revive her - while still trying to keep this from Jackson, at least until they know all the facts. Meredith is soon reminding everyone that she went through the same thing ages ago - with the ferry boat crash and her purgatory - and she managed to come back alright. So, surely, there's hope for April, right? They need to  rush April into an OR and get her on bypass if they even have a hope of saving her. Jackson eventually - and accidentally - learns that April is dying, sprinting into the OR and demanding information. Which, beyond the fact that they had warmed April's body up, nobody really has any. Before they can shock April, they need to wait and see if she shows any sign of a heart rhythm. So, Owen asks everyone to pray for April, as he knows it is what she would end up wanting. After some heartbreaking scenes, April has a heartbeat once again. April is moved into her hospital bed, where basically it seems like every doctor in Grey Sloan Memorial is standing beside her as they wait to find out if she will wake up. Arizona reveals that April had Matthew had secretly gotten back together, and that they were actually in love, before everyone decides to leave Jackson alone in the room. He pleads with God to save April, saying that he will believe in God, he'll do anything he needs to - just as long as he doesn't take April. And, by the episode's end and against all odds, April squeezes Jackson's hand as her eyes open. Based off the promo for next week's episode, it looks like things are back in full swing for April - and she'll be getting her Happily Ever After.
