Emmerdale fans were left stunned after tonight’s dramatic episode saw Charity Dingle’s rapist, DI Mark Bails, locked up for years.
The twisted policeman was jailed for his sickening abuse of Charity, which saw him hold her captive and rape her when she was under the age of 14.
Earlier this week, viewers were worried that he would manage to escape justice after he tried to trick the jurors and began to rely on an argument of consent.
But Wednesday night’s episode saw Bails sentenced to 30 years behind bars – as the judge commended Charity for her “fortitude”.
The judge told him:
“You have been found guilty of crimes that were acts of calculated, cynical wickedness.
“I commend Miss Dingle for her fortitude. Without her courage I have no doubt you would continue to pose a risk to vulnerable people.
“You are a dangerous predator who abused a position of the highest trust.
“Behaviour such as yours can only be met by such a prison sentence of significant length, I therefore sentence you to a prison term of 30 years.
“You will be subject to registration on the sex offenders’ register for life. Take him down.”
Fans became emotional over the scenes, with many praising Emma Atkins – the actress who plays Charity – for her performance in the episode.
