‘The future will be brighter than ever…’ Black Mirror renewed for another season

“Be right back.”

Black Mirror has officially been renewed for a fifth season.

Netflix announced the news on Twitter on Monday afternoon alongside a video that went through clips from a number of previous episodes – including season 3’s Nosedive and San Junipero, as well as the first season’s Fifteen Million Merits.

As the camera panned out, the screen confirmed that Charlie Brooker’s technology anthology series would “be right back”.

As excited as we are by Netflix’s news, there’s still a few things that remain pretty unclear about it all.

The first (and most important, in our opinions) is when are we going to be seeing more Black Mirror?

The two series’ commissioned by Netflix – 3 and 4 – were released in the later half of the year, with seasons 3 making it out in October 2016 and season 4 released in December 2017.

So, based on the timelines of previous seasons, it’s looking likely that we’ll seethe return of Black Mirror some time late in the year – either 2018 or 2019 (fingers crossed).

It’s also unclear how many episodes there will be in the anthology’s fifth season.

While seasons 1 and 2 had just three episodes each (and then there was the one-off Christmas special), the straight-to-Netflix episodes were meant to be a 12-episode season.

The 12 episode order later got divided into two separate six episode seasons, so we’re remaining hopeful that season 5 will bring just as many eerie tales.
