Game of Thrones showrunners to write, produce new Star Wars films

Keeley Ryan

Winterfell is going to seem like a galaxy far, far away.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been announced to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

The movies will be separate from the Skywalker saga, as well as the trilogy being developed by The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Following the news, Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said:

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today.

“Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement of their own that they were “honoured”,  “a little terrified”, and “so excited” about the project.

The statement read:

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since.

“We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the films yet.

The duo is currently working on the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, which is expected to return to the small screen at some point in 2019.
