Grey’s Anatomy is putting a new spin on the love triangle next season and we’re intrigued

Grey’s Anatomy is due to return for its record-breaking season 15 in a few weeks – and with it, the “season of love”.

Which, after a very few heavy and just generally dramatic few years, we feel is well needed.

Showrunner Krista Vernoff is said to be keen to add “more joy and more light and more humour” into the series, which will include a continuation of some of the lighter storylines last year.

And, from the sounds of things, a resolution to the Amelia-Owen-Teddy love triangle that started last season.

Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd – otherwise known to Grey’s fans as Dr. Teddy Altman and Dr. Owen Hunt – recently gave an interview where they discussed the impending love triangle and how it’s going to be unlike one the show has had before.

First, though? A little recap.

Last season ended with Teddy back in Seattle on what appeared to be a full-time basis – and very heavily pregnant with what is likely Owen’s child, after they spent the night together in Germany.

It initially seemed like the pair were going to get their happily ever at the time – Owen was ready to give up his life in the United States and move to be with her – before Teddy realised Owen was still involved with his ex, Amelia.

Meanwhile, Amelia and Owen decided to get a divorce earlier in the season after they realised their marriage was likely a result of her brain tumour.

But as the season went on, the pair continued to get closer and closer again – especially after Amelia moved in to help Owen care for his foster son, Leo.

Raver told The Hollywood Reporter that the story was going to be unlike a normal kind of love triangle, explaining:

We’re in 2018 and I pitched, if we can, not having woman pitted against woman. Amelia and Teddy definitely have what they want, but maybe there’s a different way for us to approach it.

“And the writers seem very interested in that and we’re hopefully going to head in that direction. I think that will open up a very different storyline.”

While Owen and Teddy were previously in a love triangle with Cristina, McKidd admitted this one was going to be different – namely because there are children involved.

He said:

“Owen and Teddy and Cristina had a very intense, slightly juvenile love triangle.

“What they want to do [now] is show people who have histories and have feelings — all three of these people [Owen, Amelia and Teddy] have a lot baggage and history with each other.

“And there’s children involved, which is a responsibility. It’s not just young people going, ‘I love you … I don’t know who I love.’

“They’re grown-ups now. It’s going to be interesting to see how people navigate this pretty murky and difficult and challenging news.”

Although Owen won’t be finding out about Teddy’s pregnancy for a little bit, as McKidd said that the doctor was still unaware as of episode 2 – and he reckons it’s going to take some time for Owen to adjust.

The actor joked:

“He’s been yearning for a family and a child for years, and now he’s got too many kids! You have to be careful what you wish for!”

He also spoke about the possibility of an Owen-Amelia reunion – and how Teddy’s return is going to possibly through  spanner in the works for the on-again-off-again pair.

He added:

“Owen and Amelia have been enjoying that post-tumor time together and this very adult endeavor of going, ‘We want to be there for these two children who need us.’

“I like where they’re at and where they’re headed because they’re both being quite adult. It’s bringing out the best in them.

“It’s creating a lot of attraction to one another — they’re seeing the best in each other again. They’re genuinely going, ‘Maybe we do have another chance.’

“In the midst of all that, Teddy is coming back. I don’t know what she’s going to be like with Owen.

“I don’t think she’s going to show up being, ‘I miss you and I love you,’ because she didn’t want to speak to him ever again the last time she saw him.

“It’s going to be really fun — he’s got more love than he can handle!”
