Movie fans around the world were thrilled on Wednesday when it was officially announced that the production on Independence Day 2 has been given the green light.
Director Roland Emmerich took to Facebook to announce the news stating; “I’ve waited a long time to share this news with you. Independence Day 2 has officially been greenlit by FOX. I couldn’t have done this without the help of brilliant writers, Nicolas Wright and James Woods! Can’t wait to share the ride with you.”
The news isn’t all good though as reports have stated that star of the first movie Will Smith will not be returning for the sequel.
The original was released in 1996 and took in $811 million when it hit cinemas around the world and is now ranked 43rd in the highest grossing films of all time.
The sequel is said to be coming to cinemas on July 4th, 2016 – 20 years after the original was released.
