This little girl was basically all of us when Geri left the Spice Girls 20 years ago

Spice Girls fans couldn't believe it.

“Not Geri! Why?”

It’s officially been 20 years since the hearts of Spice Girls fans were broken…otherwise known as the day Geri Halliwell left the band.

Yep, May 31, 1998, was the day that Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton,  Mel B, and Mel C were left to carry on as a four piece band.

And to commemorate the occasion, the BBC unearthed footage of the original news report from the day – as well as interviews with some devastated Spice Girls fans, including one who said Geri “let the whole country down”.

A heartbroken Spice Girls fan said:

“Geri’s my favourite so I was a bit upset. Actually I did start crying because I think she was the best Spice Girl.”

Another disbelieving fan told the camera:

“I think everything was fine with five and now that Geri’s leaving she’s kind of letting the whole country down.”

Also featured in the montage is Geri’s management, making a statement on her behalf, as well as a representative for the Spice Girls saying how the band would continue on.

There was also a hashtag for the day that was in it, #GeriQuits20.

One fan called it “the day when my 12-year-old heart broke for the first time”, while another declared it “one of the worst days of my childhood”.
