If you happen to turn on TXFM today and are baffled by what you’re listening to, don’t panic: you haven’t accidentally been sent back in time.
All day today, the station is marking the 25th anniversary of Nirvana’s immortal album, Nevermind, by giving over the whole day’s broadcast to music and bands from 1991.
Seeing as the station wasn’t around at the time, it’s pretending that today is September 24, 1991 – the release date of that seminal album.
As the station explains on its site, TXFM wanted to explore “How would we have sounded? What bands would we have gotten behind? What singles would we have been playing? What was in the news?”
It continues:
“Nirvana’s Nevermind album changed everything in the world of rock music. Bands like Poison, Warrant, Nelson, and dozens of other Hair-Rock acts woke up one morning to find their careers in the toilet thanks to these three scruffy, unwashed Seattle Ne’er-do-wells. Nirvana offered no-frills authenticity, aggressive music, songs with titles like “Territorial Pissings”, “Drain You” and “Lithium”, and in Kurt Cobain, a true musical genius. Like the Sex Pistols fifteen years previously, it was a case of out with the old, in with the new. Sure, Nirvana had been around for a few years and one album prior to this, but they had the power of a major label behind them for Nevermind, which had the ability to bring their music to the entire world. And we needed it.”
So far today, the gimmick is proving hugely popular with listeners.
Absolutely HOOKED to @TXFMDublin broadcasting as though its 1991. It's stuff like this that makes this station so brilliant. #TXFM1991
