A timeline of Britney’s freedom since her conservatorship battle win

Katy Brennan

She is thriving.

In November 2021, Britney fans around the world collectively sighed a breath of relief as the news broke that the singer had been released from a gruelling 13-year conservatorship.

It’s been genuinely heartwarming to watch her enjoying her new sense of freedom in life, something she shares with fans on social media.

One look at her Instagram tells you she’s happier than ever – as she puts it herself, she’s “just grateful, honestly, for each day”. Here’s what she’s been up to since her legal win.

Conservatorship ends – November 2021

In 2008, Britney was placed under a conservatorship with her father Jamie Spears having total control over her life and career. Conservators cited concerns about her mental health as the reason.

What happened next was an excruciatingly long legal battle, where Britney fought tirelessly to regain her freedom. Her plight and her efforts were highlighted by a fan-led movement called FreeBritney – a movement acknowledged by the singer herself for its role in helping her take her life back.

In 2021, she hired her own lawyer and formally asked a court to put an end to her conservatorship. The star came forward with some harrowing and severe allegations regarding what she’d been put through – including being drugged, forced to work, having zero privacy, and not being allowed to see her friends. The conservatorship officially ended in Novemeber.

Engagement to Sam Asghari – October 2021

Just one month before her conservatorship officially ended, Britney announced her engagement to her boyfriend Sam Asghari. The singer showed off her new engagement ring in a number of clips in a Instagram reel, telling fans: “I can’t believe it!!!”

The couple first met on the set of her music video for Slumber Party in 2016.

Travelling – December 2021 – April 2022

Britney wasted no time getting out there and seeing the world when her conservatorship ended. She jetted off to Mexico for her 40th birthday in December with Sam.

Back in January, she enjoyed a sun-soaked holiday in the gorgeous tropical setting of Maui, Hawaii, one of her favourite destinations, also with her fiancé.

More recently, she uploaded videos and photos of herself on another holiday, frolicking nude on the beach totally carefree – and honestly, she was glowing. If that doesn’t scream freedom, what does?

Britney teases new projects – Feb-April 2022

It seems that Britney has also rediscovered her creativity recently. In one of her iconic Instagram dance videos, she grooved to a song from her Blackout album and hinted that new music could be on the way soon.

“This is 13 seconds of me in heels before I dyed my hair purple…. This is a tease of what’s to come !!!!” she wrote int the caption. “I’m reminding myself and the world of who I am !!!! Pssss new song in the works … I’m gonna let you know what I mean.” (Fingers crossed for new Britney tunes soon!)

Then in April, she announced she would be writing a tell-all book about her life and her conservatorship. It came after she blasted her sister Jamie Lynn Spears for writing a memoir, accusing her of selling the book – which contained stories about Britney – at her expense.

Baby news – 11 April 2022

On Monday night, Britney took to Instagram to share the happy news that she’s expecting her third child.

And while we’re all delighted for her, there’s one thing in particular that makes this announcement so powerful.

Britney previously claimed she was required to wear an IUD to prevent pregnancy for the past 13 years, against her will. This utter disregard for bodily autonomy could be one of the most sickening things to come to light about her conservatorship.

Now, it’s clear Britney is finally taking back control over her own body and reproductive health.

A new journey – (2022-???)

Following what was likely one of the most transformative years of Britney’s life, she said her goals for 2022 were to “push” herself a bit more.

“Last year was growth for me,” she said on Instagram “I still have a way to go! My goal for this year is to push myself a bit more and do things that scare me but not too much!”
