I used to borrow them from the primary school library, knowing well that I shouldn't, and then read them just before bed to ensure that I never slept again. It's been 15 years and I still haven't had a decent night's kip.
They tapped into the fragile childhood psyche that involved fears about monsters under the bed, haunted houses and puppets that come to life. To this day, I still can't go out to our shed in the back garden when it's dark, for fear of being blow away in oblivion by a haunted leaf blower.
Imagine if Goosebumps books were written for modern adults, exposing our fears and apprehensions about everyday life. Christ, we'd never sleep again.
